Seeing a vision/dream

When seeing a nightmare #1

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The good dream is from Allah, and the bad dream is from shaytan. When you see what you dislike:

  • Spit to your left side three times when you wake up,
  • And seek refuge with Allah from its evil. It will not harm you then, Allah willing.

A‛oodhu billaahi minash-shayṭaanir-rajeem

I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the outcast

Abu Salama (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I would see dreams which weighed on me more heavily than a mountain. When I heard this hadith, I was not concerned about it.”

(Muwatta Malik Book 52, Hadith 1754)

When seeing a nightmare #2

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When one of you sees a vision which he dislikes:

  • He must spit on his left (three times),
  • Seek refuge in Allah from the devil three times,
  • And turn from the side on which he was lying (turn to the opposite side).

(Sunan Abi Dawud 5022, Authenticated by Al Albani as Sahih)

When seeing a good dream or nightmare

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Good dreams are from Allah, so if any one of you sees which he likes:

  • He should not disclose it to one but whom he loves,

But if he sees something which he does not like:

  • He should spit on his left side thrice
  • And seek refuge with Allah from the mischief of the Satan and its mischief (i.e. of the dream),
  • And he should not relate it to anyone, then it would not harm him.

(Sahih Muslim 2261)
