Virtue of bowing and prostration

وَإِنِّي قَدْ نُهِيتُ عَنِ الْقِرَاءَةِ فِي الرُّكُوعِ وَالسُّجُودِ فَإِذَا رَكَعْتُمْ فَعَظِّمُوا رَبَّكُمْ وَإِذَا سَجَدْتُمْ فَاجْتَهِدُوا فِي الدُّعَاءِ فَإِنَّهُ قَمِنٌ أَنْ يُسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: I have been forbidden to recite the Qur'an when bowing and prostrating, so when you bow, then glorify your Lord and when you prostrate, then strive hard in supplication, for it is more deserving of a response.

Supplications for bowing #1

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ ، سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ ، سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ 

Subḥaana rabbiyal-‛adheem, subḥaana rabbiyal-‛adheem, subḥaana rabbiyal-‛adheem

How far from imperfection is my Lord, The Supreme. How far from imperfection is my Lord, The Supreme. How far from imperfection is my Lord, The Supreme.

(Sunan an-Nasa'i 1145)

 

Supplications for bowing #2

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ رَكَعْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ ، ولَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ

خَشَعَ لَكَ سَمْعِي ، وَبَصَرِي ، وَمُخِّي ، وَعَظْمِي ، وَعَصَبِي

Allaahumma laka raka‛tu wa bika aamantu, wa laka aslamt,

Khasha‛a laka sam‛ee, wa baṣaree, wa mukh-khee, wa ‛aẓmee, wa ‛aṣabee

O Allah, unto You I have bowed, and in You I have believed, and to You I have submitted. My hearing, and my sight, and my mind, and my bones, and my nerves are humbled before You.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) often said while bowing and prostrating:

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّـنَا وَبِحَمْدِكَ ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي 

Subḥaanak-allaahumma rabbanaa wa biḥamdik, allaahumm-aghfir lee

How far from imperfection are You O Allah, our Lord and I praise You. O Allah, forgive me.

سُبُّوحٌ قُدُّوسٌ ، رَبُّ الْمَلائِكَةِ وَالرُّوحِ

Subbooḥun quddoos, rabbul-malaa’ikati war-rooh

Perfect and Holy (He is), Lord of the angels and the Rooh (i.e. Jibra'eel)

سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْجَبَرُوتِ ، والْمَلَكُوتِ ، وَالْكِبْرِيَاءِ ، وَالْعَظَمَةِ 

Subḥaana dhil-jabarooti wal-malakooti wal-kibriyaa’i wal-‛adhamah

How far from imperfections is He,

The Possessor of total power, sovereignty, magnificence and grandeur.

Rabbanaa [wa] lakal-ḥamdu

Our Lord, to You belongs all praise

رَبَّـنَا لَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْدًا كَثِيرًا طَـيِّـبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ

Rabbanaa [wa] lakal-ḥamdu ḥamd-an katheer-an ṭayyib-an mubaarak-an feeh

Our Lord, to You belongs all praise, an abundant beautiful blessed praise.

 

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I saw over thirty angels competing to write it first."

(Sahih al-Bukhari 799)

mil’-as-samawaati wa mil’-al-arḍi wa maa baynahumaa wa mil’a maa shi’ta min shay’in ba‛d

’ahl-ath-thanaa’i wal-majd, aḥaqqu maa qaalal-‛abd, wa kullunaa laka ‛abd

Allaahumma laa maani‛a li maa a‛ṭayta wa laa mu‛ṭiya li maa mana‛ta wa laa yanfa‛u dhal-jaddi minkal-jadd

Our Lord, to You belongs all praise, an abundant beautiful blessed praise.

[a praise] that fills the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, and all that You will.

O Worthy of praise and glory, the truest thing a slave has said (of You) and we are all Your slaves.

O Allah, none can prevent what You have willed to bestow and none can bestow what You have willed to prevent, and no wealth or majesty can benefit anyone, as from You is all wealth and majesty.

Supplications while prostrating

Virtue of prostration

أقرب ما يكون العبد من ربه وهو ساجد، فأكثروا الدعاء‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "A slave becomes nearest to his Lord when he is in prostration. So increase supplications while prostrating."

(Riyadh As Saliheen, Muslim, Book 16, Hadith 1428)

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى ، سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى ، سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى 

Subḥaana rabbiyal-a‛laa, subḥaana rabbiyal-a‛laa, subḥaana rabbiyal-a‛laa

How far from imperfection is my Lord, The Most High. How far from imperfection is my Lord, The Most High. How far from imperfection is my Lord, The Most High.

Supplication for prostrating #2

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ سَجَدْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ ، وَلَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ،

سَجَدَ وَجْهِي لِلَّذِي خَلَقَهُ وَصَوَّرَهُ وَشَقَّ سَمْعَهُ وَبَصَرَهُ،

تَبَارَكَ اللهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ

Allaahumma laka sajadtu wa bika aamantu, wa laka aslamtu,

sajada wajhee lil-ladhee khalaqahu wa ṣawwarahu wa shaqqa sam‛ahu wa baṣarahu,

tabaarak-allaahu aḥsanul-khaaliqeen

O Allah, unto You I have prostrated and in You I have believed, and unto You I have submitted.

My face has prostrated before He Who created it and fashioned it, and brought forth its faculties of hearing and seeing.

Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي كُلَّهُ ، دِقَّهُ وَجِلَّهُ ، وَأَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ ، وَعَلانِيَتَهُ وَسِرَّهُ

Allaahumm-agh-fir lee dhambee kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, wa awwalahu wa aakhirahu, wa ‛alaaniyatahu wa sirrah

O Allah, forgive me all of my sins, the small and great of them, the first and last of them, and the seen and hidden of them.

(Muslim 483)

أللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ ، وَبِمُعَافَاتِكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ ،

 وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ ،

لَا أُحْصِي ثَـنَاءً عَلَيْكَ أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ

Allaahumma innee a‛oodhu bi-riḍaaka min sakhaṭik, wa bi-mu‛aafaatika min ‛uqoobatik, wa ’a‛oodhu bika minka, laa uḥṣee thanaa’-an ‛alayka, anta kamaa athnayta ‛alaa nafsik

O Allah, I seek refuge with Your pleasure from Your anger and with Your pardon from Your punishment, and I seek refuge with You from You.

I cannot enumerate Your praise, You are as You have praised Yourself.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَاجْبُرْنِي وَاهْدِنِي وَعَافِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي

Allaahumm-agh-fir lee, warḥamnee, wajburnee, wahdinee, wa 'afini, warzuqnee.

O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, mend me, guide me, give me the well-being and grant me sustenance.

(Sahih Al Kalim At Tayyib 98)
