Before the Prayer:
- Face the Qiblah
- Intention in the heart for performing the stated prayer
Starting the Prayer:
1. Takbeerat Al Ihraam: Saying Allahu Akbar ‘Allah is the Greatest’ (الله أكبر) while raising both hands to the level of the shoulders or earlobes (palms should face the Qiblah)
2. Place the right hand over the left hand, and look down at the place of prostration
3. Seek refuge with Allah from the devil
أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
Transliteration: "a‛oodhu billaahi minash-shayṭaanir-rajeem"
Translation: I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed devil.
4. Saying ‘Bismallah’
بِسْمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Transliteration: "Bismillaah ir-Raḥmaan ir-Raḥeem."
Translation: "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful"
5. Reciting Surah Al Fatiha
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلهِ رَبِّ الْعَـٰلَمِينَ
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
مَـٰلِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ
صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
Translation:
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful
All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds.
The Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Owner of the Day of Recompense
You (alone) we worship, and You (alone) we ask for help
Guide us to the Straight Path
The way of those upon whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger, or those who went astray.
On finishing the recitation of this chapter, you should say Ameen (an Arabic term meaning 'Accept our supplication'),
6. Bowing (Ruku’):
- Raise the hands in the same way as done in the beginning of the prayer and say: Allahu Akbar ‘Allah is the Greatest’ (الله أكبر).
- Then bow down by grabbing your knees firmly with your hands, spread your finds, stick out your elbows, and straighten your back horizontally.
- Say the following while in ruku’:
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ (3 times)
Transliteration: subḥaana rabbiyal-‛adheem (3 times)
Translation: Far from imperfection is my Lord, The Most Exalted (3 times)
- Rising from bowing (ruku’):
- While rising: raise your hands to either shoulder or ear level and say:
سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ (once)
Transliteration: "Sami‛-Allaahu liman ḥamidah" (once)
Translation: "Allah responds to whom praises Him." (once)
رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْد (once)
Transliteration: "Rabbana wa lakal ḥamd" (once)
Translation: Our Lord, to You belongs all praise. (once)
8. Prostration (Sujood):
a. Say Allahu Akbar ‘Allah is the Greatest’ (الله أكبر) without raising the hands
b. Fall into prostration, with putting your hands to the ground first then knees
c. Make sure the forehead, tip of the nose, both palms, both knees, both toes of the feet are touching the floor, and your belly is away from your thighs
d. The two hands should point to the Qiblah, with the fingers close to one anther
e. The toes should point towards the Qiblah, and the feet should touch each other
f. Arms and elbows are away from the ground. Do not spread the arms out like a dog spreading its forearms.
g. While in prostration, you are at your closest to Allah, the following is said:
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى (3 times)
Transliteration: subḥaana rabbiyal-a'laa (3 times)
Translation: Far from imperfections is my Lord, The Most High (3 times)
9. Sitting between the Prostration (Sujood):
a. While rising from sujood, say Allahu Akbar ‘Allah is the Greatest’ (الله أكبر) without raising the hands
b. Then sit on your left leg while keeping your right foot upright with its toes facing the Qiblah.
c. Place your hands on your knees, and say the following supplication:
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي ، رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي
Transliteration: rabbigh-fir lee, rabbigh-fir lee
Translation: My Lord forgive me, My Lord forgive me.
10. Second Prostration (Sujood):
a. While going down into second sujood, say Allahu Akbar ‘Allah is the Greatest’ (الله أكبر) without raising the hands
b. Perform sujood in a similar manner as before and say:
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى (3 times)
Transliteration: subḥaana rabbiyal-a'laa (3 times)
Translation: Far from imperfections is my Lord, The Most High (3 times)
YOU HAVE NOW COMPLETED ONE RAKAH (UNIT) OF PRAYER
11. Getting up for second rakah (unit):
a. Say Allahu Akbar ‘Allah is the Greatest’ (الله أكبر) without raising the hands
b. Sit for a while
c. Use fists to get up
12. For the second rakah (unit), repeat steps 4 to 10.
13. After completing your second sujood, before standing up for the 3rd unit, remain seated as you would while seated between the prostrations.
a. The right thumb and middle finger are joined together to form a circle, and the right index finger is used to point towards the Qiblah, look at the index finger (instead of place of prostration) and move the index finger while saying the tashahud
b. The left hand grabs the left knees
c. The first tashahud is said once:
التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ والطَّـيِّـبَاتُ
السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ ، السَّلامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
Transliteration: at-taḥiyyaatu lillaahi waṣ-ṣalaawaatu waṭ-ṭayyibaatu, as-salaamu ‛alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa raḥmatullaahi wa barakaatuh, as-salaamu ‛alaynaa wa ‛alaa ‛ibaad-illaahiṣ-ṣaaliḥeen, ash-hadu an laa ilaaha ill-allaahu, wa ash-hadu anna muḥammad-an ‛abduhu wa rasooluh.
Translation: Salutations are for Allah, all acts of worship and good deeds are for Him. Peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you O Prophet. Peace be upon us and upon all of Allah's righteous slaves. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you are praying the Fajr prayer which consists of two rakahs (units), you will also say the final tashahud and tasleem (see below) after saying the first tashahud. If you are praying any other prayer, then you will continue to the 3rd rakah (unit).
14. After saying the first tashahud, you will say the final tashahud once:
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ
، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ
، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
Transliteration: Allaahumma ṣalli ‛alaa muḥammadin wa ‛alaa aali muḥammadin kamaa ṣallayta ‛alaa ibraaheema wa ‛alaa aali ibraaheema, innaka ḥameedun majeed, allaahumma baarik ‛alaa muḥammadin wa ‛alaa aali muḥammadin kamaa baarakta ‛alaa ibraaheema wa ‛alaa aali ibraaheema, innaka ḥameedun majeed
Translation: O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the followers of Muhammad, just as You sent prayers upon Ibrāheem and upon the followers of Ibrāheem. Indeed, You are full of praise and majesty. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the followers of Muhammad, just as You sent blessings upon Ibrāheem and upon the followers of Ibrāheem. Indeed, You are full of praise and majesty.
15. Tasleem: salutation to end the prayer
a. This should be done by turning the face towards the right shoulder so much so that the people behind would be able to see your cheek.
b. As the face is turned to the right, say the following:
السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ
Transliteration: as-salāmu 'alaykum wa raḥmatullah
Translation: Peace and mercy upon you
c. Then turn your face towards the left shoulder so much so that the people behind would be able to see your cheek, as your face is to turned to the left say the following again:
السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ
Transliteration: as-salāmu 'alaykum wa raḥmatullah
Translation: Peace and mercy upon you
16. If you are praying anything besides the Fajr prayer, then you rise for the third rakah (unit) after saying the first tashahud.
17. As you rise for the third unit, raise your hands and say Allahu Akbar ‘Allah is the Greatest’ (الله أكبر)
18. Repeat steps 4 to 10.
a. If praying the Maghrib prayer and the third unit is your final unit, then repeat steps 13 to 15.
b. If praying the Dhuhr, ‘Asr, or ‘Isha prayer, then repeat steps 4 to 15.
