Ruqyah is a method for healing, through some parts of the Qur’an and Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ). Supplications for healing could be for a good number of diseases, sicknesses of the heart (arrogance, showing off, hatred, jealousy, etc.), depression, loneliness, evil eye, magic, jinn possession, and Shaytaan’s attacks.

The following are the verses from the Qur’an concerning the concept of healing:

“And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers.” (Al-‘Isra’, 17:82)

“O mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.” (Yunus, 10:57)

The scholars are unanimously agreed that it is permissible to use ruqyah if three conditions are met: it should based on the words of Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, or His names or His attributes; it should be in Arabic or in words the meaning of which can be understood; and it should be accepted that ruqyah does not have any effect in and of itself, rather that happens by the will and decree of Allah. (End quote from Fath al-Baari)

The Permissible Ruqyah from the Qur’an

"I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the outcast."

"In the name of Allah - the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. [All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds - the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful, Sovereign of the Day of Recompense. It is You we worship and You we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path - the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray."

"I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaytan. Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great." (Al-Baqarah, 2:255 [Ayat al-Kursi])

"The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say: “We make no distinction between any of His Messengers,” and they say: “We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your Forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return.” Allah burdens not a person beyond what he can bear. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error. Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us. Our Lord! Put not on us a greater burden than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Protector, and help us against the disbelieving people.” (Al-Baqarah, 2:285-286)

"In the name of Allah - the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent." (3 times) (Al-‘Ikhlas, 112:1-4)

"In the name of Allah - the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak. From the evil of that which He created And from the evil of darkness when it settles. And from the evil of the blowers in knots. And from the evil of an envier when he envies." (3 times) (Al-Falaq, 113:1-5)

"In the name of Allah - the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the God of mankind. From the evil of the retreating whisperer. Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind - from among the jinn and mankind." (3 times) (An-Nas, 114:1-6)

"In the name of Allah. He may cure you from all kinds of illness and safeguard you from the evil of a jealous one when he feels jealous and from the evil influence of eye." (Sahih Aj Jamie' 4672, Authenticated by Al Albani as Sahih)

The following are some supplications to cure sicknesses and diseases:

One should request Allah to heal by saying:

Allaahumma ath-hibil ba’-sa rabban-naasi ishfi antash-shaafee laa shifaa-a illaa shifaauka shifaa-an laa yughaadiru saqamaa.

"O Allah, Lord of the people, take away the disease and cure him; You are the One Who cures and there is no cure except Your Cure – a cure that leaves no disease." (Al Bukhari 5742)

Note: Touch the sick person with the right hand and supplicate the supplication. You can also recite the supplication for yourself.

Place your hand where you feel pain and recite:

Bismillaah. A’oothu billaahi wa qudratihee min sharri maa ajidu wa uHaathir.

"In the Name of Allah." (3 times) "I seek refuge in Allah and in His Power from the evil of what I find and of what I guard against. " (7 times) (Muslim 2202)

Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He who visits a sick person who is not on the point of death and supplicates seven times:

As-alullaahal ‘aDHeema rabbal ‘arshil aDHeemi an yashfi-yak.

“I beseech Allah the Great, the Rubb of the Great Throne, to heal you.”

Allah will certainly heal him from that sickness.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud 3106, Authenticated by Al Albani as Sahih)

O Allah You are the First and nothing has come before You, and You are the Last, and nothing may come after You. You are the Most High, nothing is above You and You are the Most Near and nothing is nearer than You. Remove our debts from us and enrich us against poverty.” (1 time) (Muslim 2713, Abu Daud 5051)

Evil Eye (Envy)

With regard to treating one who has been affected by envy, there are two ways of doing this:

If the person who envied him is known, he may be asked to do ghusl and the water used should then be poured on the “victim.” If he is not known then the remedy is by means of ruqyah and the dhikrs prescribed in sharee’ah.

It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded me, or he commanded (the people) to use ruqyah to deal with the evil eye.” (Sahih Muslim 2195)

Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The evil eye is real and if anything were to overtake the divine decree, it would be the evil eye. When you are asked to take a bath (to provide a cure) from the influence of the evil eye, you should take a bath.” (Sahih Muslim 2188)

An Atom of Prevention is Better than One Ton of Cure

The source of evil eye is from Shaytaan who puts the idea of jealousy and hate into people’s hearts and minds against family, friends, and relatives. The hidden source about this sickness and disease could be that some people are being blessed by Allah with richness, peace, and happiness. Those who are crooked and are being possessed by Shaytaans will start feeling jealousy towards those who are blessed with Allah. Therefore, one has to protect himself on a daily basis by being in touch with Allah, and to remember Him, as well as to obey Him. Then and only then, no one will disturb him or play magic against him. Even Shaytaans themselves cannot hurt him.

The Qur’an says in Surah Az-Zukhruf:

“If anyone withdraws himself from the remembrance of The Most Gracious, We appoint for him a Shaytaan, to be an intimate companion.” (Az-Zukhruf, 43:36)

There is nothing wrong with taking precautions against the evil eye before it happens, and this does not contradict the idea of tawakkul (putting one's trust in Allah). In fact this is tawakkul, because tawakkul means putting one’s trust in Allah whilst also implementing the means that have been permitted or enjoined. The Prophet   used to seek refuge for al-Hasan and al-Husayn and say: U’eethukumaa bikalimaatillahit-taam-maati min kulli shaiTaaniw-wahaam-maatin wamin kulli ‘aynin laam-mah (“I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye”).’” (Al-Tirmidhi, 2060; Abu Dawood, 4737)  And he would say, “Thus Ibraheem used to seek refuge with Allah for Ishaaq and Ismaa’eel, peace be upon them both.” (Al-Bukhaari, 3371)

(Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 2/117, 118)
