What to say when waking-up during the night

Supplication when waking-up during the night #1

Whoever wakes up at night and says

Laa ilaaha ill-allaahu waḥdahu laa shareeka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamd, wa huwa ‛alaa kulli shay’in qadeer, subḥaan-allaahi wal-ḥamdu lillaah, wa laa ilaaha ill-allaahu wallaahu akbar, wa laa ḥawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaahil-‛aliyyil-‛adheem rabbigh-fir lee

None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone and with no partner, to Him belongs [all] sovereignty and praise, and He is able to do all things; How far from imperfection is Allah, and all praise is for Allah, and none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Allah is the greatest, and there is no power nor might except with Allah, The Most High, The Supreme, my Lord forgive me.

And then supplicates: 'O my Lord forgive me', he will be forgiven." In another narration: "and then asks [for something], he will be answered. If he then performs ablution and prays, his prayer will be accepted."

(Sunan Abi Dawud 5060, Authenticated by Al Albani as Sahih)

Supplication when waking-up during the night #2

Whoever goes to his bed while in a state of purity and remembering Allah, until slumber overtakes him, he shall not get up at any hour of the night and ask Allah for something from the good of the world and the Hereafter except that Allah shall grant it to him.

(Sahih Al Kalim At Tayyib 43, Authenticated by Al Albani as Hasan Ghareeb)

Supplication when waking-up during the night #3

Alḥamdu lillaahil-ladhee ‛aafaanee fee jasadee wa radda ‛alayya rooḥee wa adhina lee bi dhikrih

All praise is for Allah who restored to me my health and returned my soul and has allowed me to remember Him.

(At Tirmidhi 3401)

Supplication when startled during sleep

A‛oodh-u bikalimaat-i-llah-i-ttaammat-i min ghaḍabih-i wa‛iqaabih-i , washarri ‛ibaadih-i wamin hamazaat-i-shshayaaṭeen-i wa’an yaḥḍuroon-i

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and punishment, and from the evil of His slaves, and from the madness and appearance of devils.

(Sunan Abi Dawud 3893, Authenticated by Al Albani as Hasan)
