Opening supplications for the prayer

Opening supplication #1

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to keep silent between the Takbir and the recitation of Qur'an and that interval of silence used to be a short one. I said to the Prophet (ﷺ) "May my parents be sacrificed for you! What do you say in the pause between Takbir and recitation?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

Allaahumma baa‛id baynee wa bayna khaṭaayaa-ya kamaa baa‛adta baynal-mashriqi wal-maghrib, allaahumma naqqinee min khaṭaayaa-ya kamaa yunaqqath-thawbul-abyaḍu minad-danas, allaahummagh-silnee min khaṭaayaa-ya bith-thalji wal-maa’i wal-barad

O Allah, distance me from my sins just as You have distanced The East from The West, O Allah, purify me of my sins as a white robe is purified of filth, O Allah, cleanse me of my sins with snow, water, and ice.

(Sahih Al Bukhari 744)

Opening supplication #2

Allaahu akbaru kabeer-an, walḥamdu lillaahi katheer-an,  wa subḥaan-allaahi bukrat-an wa-aṣeel-an (3 times)

A‛oodhu billaahi minash-shayṭaan, min nafkhihi wa nafthihi wa hamzih

Allah is Most Great, And praise be to Allah in abundance; Glory be to Allah in the morning and after. (3 times)

I seek refuge with Allah from the devil, from his spurs, puffs and blowing

(Sahih Al Kalim At Tayyib 62)

Opening supplication #3

Subḥaanak-allaahumma wa biḥamdika, wa tabaarakas-muka wa ta‛aalaa jadduka wa laa ilaaha ghayruk

How far from imperfections are You O Allah, and I praise You. Blessed be Your name, and lofty is Your position and none has the right to be worshipped except You.

(Sahih Muslim Book 4, Hadith 54)

Opening supplication #4

Allahumma! Antal-maliku la ilaha illa ant, ana abduka zalamtu nafsi wa'taraftu bidhanbi faghfirli dhunubi jami'an, la yaghfirudhunuba illa anta, wahdini lihasanil-ahklaqi, la yahdi li ahsaniha illa anta wasrif anni sayy'aha la yasrifu anni sayy'aha illa anta,

labaika wa sa'daika, wal-khairu kulluhu fi yadaika wash-sharru laisa ilaika ana bika wa ilaika ana bika wa ilaika tabarkta wa ta'alaita astaghfiruka wa atubu ilaik.

Verily, I have turned my face toward Him who created the Heavens and the Earth hanifa (worhsipping none but Allah Alone), and I am not of the idolaters. Verily, my salah, my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of the all that exists. He has no partner. And of this I have been commanded, and I am one of the Muslims.

O Allah, You are the Sovereign and there is none worthy of worship but You. I am Your slave, I have wronged myself and I acknowledge my sin. Forgive me all my sins for no one forgives sins but You. Guide me to the best of manners for none can guide to the best of them but You. Protect me from bad manners for none can protect against them but You.

I am at Your service, all goodness is in Your hands, and evil is not attributed to You. I rely on You and turn to You, blessed and exalted are You, I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You.

(Sunan an-Nasa'i 897)

Opening supplication in night prayer #1

Alla-humma rab-ba jibraa-’eel-a wa meekaa-’eela wa ’israa-feela, faaṭir-as sama-waati wal’arḍi , ‛aalimil-ghaybi wash-shahaa-dah , anta taḥkum-u baina ‛ibaa-dika feemaa kaa-noo feehi yakh-talifoon

Ihdi-nee li-makh-tulifa feehi mi-nal-ḥaq-qi bi-’idh-nika in-naka tah-dee man tashaa’-u ilaa ṣiraaṭ-im mustaqeem-in

O Allah, Lord of Jibra'eel, Meeka'eel and Israfeel (great angels), Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the seen and the unseen. You are the arbitrator between Your slaves in that which they have disputed.

Guide me to the truth by Your leave, in that which they have differed, for verily You guide whom You will to a straight path.

(Muslim 770)

Allaahumma lakal-ḥamdu anta noorus-samaawaati wal-arḍi wa man feehinn,

wa lakal-ḥamdu anta qayyimus-samaawaati wal-arḍi wa man feehinn,

wa lakal-ḥamdu anta rabbus-samaawaati wal-arḍi wa man feehinn,

wa lakal-ḥamdu laka mulkus-samaawaati wal-arḍi wa man feehinn,

wa lakal-ḥamdu anta malikus-samaawaati wal-arḍ,

Wa lakal-ḥamdu, antal-ḥaqq, wa wa‛dukal-ḥaqq, wa qawlukal-ḥaqq, wa liqaa’ukal-ḥaqq, wal-jannatu ḥaqq, wan-naaru ḥaqq, wan-nabiyyoona ḥaqq, wa muḥammadun ḥaqq, was-saa‛atu ḥaqq,

Allaahumma laka aslamtu, wa ‛alayka tawakkaltu, wabika aamantu, wa ilayka anabtu, wabika khaaṣamtu, wa ilayka ḥaakamtu,

Faghfir lee maa qaddamtu, wa maa akh-khartu, wa maa asrartu, wa maa a‛lantu, ’antal-muqaddimu wa antal-mu’akh-khiru, laa ilaaha illaa anta, anta ilaahee laa ilaaha illaa ant.

O Allah, to You belongs all praise, You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and all that is within them.

To You belongs all praise, You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is within them.

To You belongs all praise, You are the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is within them.

To You belongs all praise and the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and all that is within them.

To You belongs all praise, You are the King of the heavens and the earth.

And to You belongs all praise. You are The Truth, Your promise is true, Your Word is true, and the Day when we will encounter You is true, the Garden of Paradise is true and the Fire is true, and the Prophets are true, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is true and the Final Hour is true.

O Allah, unto You I have submitted, and upon You I have relied, and in You I have believed, and to You I have turned in repentance, and over You I have disputed [with others], and to You I have turned for judgment.

So forgive me for what has come to pass of my sins and what will come to pass, and what I have hidden and what I have made public.

You are Al-Muqaddim (The One Who brings forward) and Al-Mu-akhkhir (The One Who delays). None has the right to be worshipped except You, You are my deity, none has the right to be worshipped except You.

(Al Bukhari 6317)
